A possible drawback of the employed DAC technology should not go unmentioned: Since NOS DACs cannot normally process the DSD format natively, the HD-Player Model 2 converts DSD files into 24bit and 176.4 kHz PCM for playback. This however, does not pose much of a problem, since the conversion from DSD to PCM is a practically lossless process – in contrast to the conversion from PCM to DSD. A similar conversion is, by the way, also at the heart of every delta sigma converter during PCM playback.
Since the selected R-2R NOS converter chips feature integrated I/V-conversion, there is no need for an external output stage. The eight converter chips per channel produce sufficient power to drive any downstream equipment, so that the signal path is kept to an absolute minimum. From the DAC boards the signal path leads back to the Digital Interface Board. Since the eight converter chips operate in full dual-differential mode, they produce a real symmetrical output signal for the XLR connectors. For the RCA connectors the signal gets unbalanced by two high grade Lundahl transformers LL1588 on the Interface Board.
Just as with the hardware, Alexej C. Ogorek placed high demands on the controlling software. He therefore developed the entire software from scratch according to his stringent requirements. Aside from the usual standard functions of music playback interfaces, he put special importance on a smooth and efficient user flow as well as on a high quality graphical presentation. It would go beyond the scope of this review to describe all its possibilities and functions.
