Removing the Aries from the chain and playing directly into a USB DAC meant a tiny loss in terms of depth and detail but not in terms of dynamics. That could result from the fact that low frequencies now seemed to be a bit more punchy, albeit less acurate. But the differences between the two Melcos remained clearly noticeable, with the N1ZH60 displaying a little more airiness, a deeper sound stage and slightly smoother playback. Again, the differences between the two machines are not enormous when partnered directly with a USB DAC but they are there. The N1ZH60 just has that certain something that dedicated audiophiles are looking for.
