But back to the Melco N1ZH60. From the outside it is practically indistinguishable from the top-of-the-range N1ZS. Both models share the same sturdy aluminum enclosure and minimalistic design with a choice of black or silver as colors. It is a good bit smaller than the traditional 19-inch enclosure of the entry level model N1A and houses 2.5-inch drives as opposed to the N1A's 3.5-inch drives. But while the N1ZS comes with two SSDs of 512 GB capacity each, the N1ZH60 includes carefully selected conventional HDDs with a total capacity of 6 TB. The N1A has to do with one single power supply, but the N1ZH60 like the N1ZS has two medical-grade PSUs, providing 30W of power each to supply the network side and the drives, USB ports etc. separately. This means, the only thing that accounts for the price difference of 3.750 Euros between the N1ZH60 and the N1ZS are the later's special 'audio-grade' Solid State Drives that are made only for the Melco products and in very small quantities. Exclusivity does come at a price, after all.
In the report about the new Melco firmware I also promised to have some exclusive information to share about the new N1ZH60, as I was expecting to get it directly from Alan Ainslie, General Manager of Melco Syncrets Inc. who was due to visit me in Groebenzell. But even after his visit there isn't really anything previously unknown I have to share about the new model. This has in no way anything to do with the frequent deviations during our conversation that included topics like watches, Light Railways or single malts. No, we did in fact discuss various aspects of digital music reproduction for most of the time, and indeed some current and future developments of Melco. Unfortunately, but also understandably, Alan asked not to publish any of these here until they were announced officially. But I felt bound by my promise to my readers so I got approval to at least reveal this much: The next update to the Melco firmware, expected to be available this year still, will not only bring the tag editor Sonkong to all Melco machines but will also include Java. It's up to you to speculate what that might be useful for ...
