After diverse experimentation, Johannes Rickert decided on Scan-Speak drivers for the Model 3.0. The bass is taken care of by an 18 centimetre driver with paper diaphragm. What sounds like tried and true is in fact the pinnacle of manufacturing technology. Two layers of paper with a stabilising embossment are glued together with special fibre admixtures at an angle of 60° to one-another. Thus the perfect stiffness, a minimum of weight and an optimum inner dampening are all combined, the developer explains. To drive these, neodymium magnets and extreme temperature resistant voice coils on a light titanium support are employed. In order to guarantee minimal distortion from respectively large oscillations at high levels, Scan-Speak set up this driver of the Illuminator series with a so-called “underhang” system – clearer is the description: short coil, long gap. A comparatively short voice coil moves in the long air gap with constant magnetic ratios, in order to maintain linearity from signal to oscillation, even at the highest levels. The magnet system and the basket are of course flow-optimised so as not to hinder the movement of the diaphragm.
